Inside the Seventh Wave: SYNOPSIS

The preface to the novel tells the story of a family walking the beach on a stormy day when the youngest of their children goes missing. This story provides a revelationary and pivotal account which underpins, with other interlacing tales, the idiosyncratic mysteries which surround this enigmatic island.

Jack Powys is at a loose end in his life. When a long-term but fragmented relationship with Trish finally peters to an end, Jack comes across an advert requesting assistance with the compilation of an anthology of stories relating to the history of Portland. Part of the deal is that he lives in one of four terrace houses which front the sea but are subject to subsidence and frequent power cuts. In the first house closest to the shore is Rowan, a young woman of thirty who has been in and out of the local mental health hospital. On the other side is Claude, an outwardly friendly man with a shady but largely unknown past. In the end terrace lives Eve, a woman in her early seventies, who is looking for her seventh husband before she dies of a mystery illness she is convinced she has. Eve is one of the last Sisters of the Island, who, in former times, were implicated in witchcraft.

Jack is not particularly disciplined at keeping himself on task and becomes increasing distracted by the lives of his neighbours. Along the way, he becomes infatuated with Rowan. Claude also shares a liking for Rowan and on discovering a secret from her past, is able to manipulate her. However, Claude’s attention is soon supplanted by a sexual interest in Rachel. Rachel is Eve’s granddaughter and is only twelve years old. In order to get nearer to Rachel, Claude masquerades as a possible suitor for Eve, a ploy she naively falls for. A number of seemingly unexplained incidents follow, all initiated by Claude.

All these tensions come together with Claude drawing Rowan and Rachel into his dark web, which leads to in an exciting but unpredictable climax, involving all the main characters.
